Hope surprises us both by sleeping for almost three hours. When she wakes up, we are in the room, sitting on the bed, eating our dessert. The space is dimly lit by the candles.

“Following your advice,” I say while softly patting Hope’s back. “During the day she’s getting used to everyday noises, the traffic, the light… but at night, I keep the shades closed and the house quiet.”

Evan smiles at me, he’s wearing nothing, but his black boxer briefs and I’ve changed into a white silk slip. It barely covers my ass for his viewing pleasure.

“You’re becoming a master already,” he praises me.

When Hope finishes, I let her lay on the bed a little, the both of us mesmerized by her beautiful little face.

“What color do you think her eyes will turn out to be?” I ask him. They’re indigo at the moment.

“Some shade of blue, I guess,” he replies, looking at her closely. “Babies’ eye color changes a lot. Maybe they turn some shade of brown, even hazel. You should know by her first birthday or a bit before that.”

Thinking of her first birthday makes me grin broadly. No, no, I’m not one of those mothers planning an over-the-top party. Just family and friends, and my baby girl dressed in a cute outfit smashing a little cake made for her.

“Did you ever think about having your own kids?” He surprises me with the question.

It feels like a wrecking ball, just slammed into the middle of my chest.

“No,” I state. “I knew it wasn’t possible for me.”

He turns his head to look at me, but I’m incapable of doing the same. With him, I’m like an open book he can read easily. And now all of my emotions are floating in the air.

“Isn’t it every girl’s dream to have the white picket fence?” His voice is light and soft, but the words hurt deeply.

I’ve never talked about this with a man.

“Not me. I’m a career woman.”

Hope closes her eyes, falling asleep quickly, so I pick her up and lay her in the bassinet.

“Says the woman with a baby in her arms,” he jokes.

“This is different.” My answer is harsh. But he needs to know, he said something about a future, right?

There is no white picket fence for me.

Protecting myself, I walk to the bathroom and close the door.

I’m not perfect, not even close. I’m incomplete. Damaged goods.

Two fat tears roll down my cheeks. It’s easy to think the fantasy is real. I’ve learned to wear armor through the years, I had to. My work is crazy on a good day. There’s no room for weakness, and my personal life is a different story. This is the first time I have allowed someone so close to me.

A soft knock calls to my attention. “Morgan?”

“Go home, Evan.”

Then there is complete silence. I think he did what I asked until the door opens, and his gaze finds mine.

“Leave me alone,” I plead as I lean over the vanity and tear my gaze away from him.
